Families, schools, and communities working together for the children

Imagine…

A city where every child feels loved and safe and has reliable adults who model positive values.

A city where every child can develop as a whole person, body, mind, and spirit.

A city whose future shines brighter, one precious child at a time.

Your support of caring, one-on-one reading, math, and homework tutors nurtures children within a circle of care.

For over 20 years, the Children Rising family has celebrated and supported children, families, and communities struggling in the midst of a decades-long educational crisis. We know that a child’s learning flourishes when families, schools, and communities work together.

Through a circle-of-care approach, Children Rising programs surround and nurture children with personalized academic support so they can become confident, engaged students. We do that by connecting families, schools, and caring members of the community through wrap-around services that give the children enhanced in-home learning opportunities and weekly one-on-one reading, math, and homework tutoring.

Putting the Child in the Center

Children are at the center of the circle of care, surrounded by the academic and emotional support they need.

The circle of care begins at home with the family. Who better understands the needs of the child they have loved, nurtured, and poured care into? Parents and caregivers are a child’s first teachers. It’s critical to empower families to confidently advocate for their child’s education, support effective in-home learning, and receive additional resources to complete after-school homework assignments promptly.

Through a circle-of-care approach, Children Rising programs surround and nurture children with personalized academic support so they can become confident, engaged students.

Through your gifts, we are closing the circle of care, creating a more nurturing, supportive environment for child learning.

We closely collaborate with Oakland Unified School District educators and the schools we serve. Children Rising programs have collectively evolved to provide more wrap-around services for the children and families these educators believe can benefit the most with additional academic support. The critical needs of struggling students are then served by well-trained, caring volunteers who provide vital in-school and after-school tutoring.

The Children Rising circle of care comprises our three targeted programs—Succeeding by Reading, Path2Math, and FamilyBridge—to support elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods and attending Oakland’s most under-resourced schools. Working in unison, the three programs give the children improved classroom engagement, self-confidence, and a fairer chance to achieve grade-level skills in reading and math as the year progresses.

Through this circle-of-care approach, we create a more nurturing, supportive environment for learning where every child and every family has a fairer chance to succeed in school … and in life.

It’s not too late for YOU to be a tutor. Volunteer today, and you will give a child the one-on-one care they need to rise to their God-given potential.

Bridging Educational Gaps in Oakland
Latina student with tutor - Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

Your gifts help overcome the educational disparities that exist in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), where 42% of students are Latino.

Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, Americans come together to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. This month-long observance is dedicated to honoring the rich histories, diverse cultures, and invaluable contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2023, it is essential not only to celebrate but also to address critical issues affecting the Latino community, especially in education.

“While our culture, traditions and religion may differ, we pride ourselves on working hard, educating ourselves as much as possible, striving for better lives for our children, loving our often large and blended families, and sharing as much of our history and customs as we can with anyone who chooses to really see us. We are not so different after all. People simply need to see us for who we are and not who they expect us to be.” — Natalie Morales
Educational Disparities

In Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), 42% of students are Latino. However, the recent iReady results for second-grade Latino students are concerning, with 68% of students one or more grade levels behind in reading and 78% one or more grade levels behind in math. These statistics underscore the need for targeted support and resources. Children who cannot read or comprehend basic math by the end of third grade are far more likely to struggle, become frustrated academically, and ultimately drop out before graduating high school.

The challenges facing Latino students are not unique to Oakland but are part of a broader national issue. A report by Excelencia in Education reveals that while Latino enrollment in colleges has increased, the graduation rates have yet to see a corresponding improvement. Across the United States, only 28% of Latino adults aged 25 or older have earned an associate’s degree or higher, compared to 48% of their white counterparts. This education gap highlights the need for systemic changes to improve Latino student achievement.

Oakland’s Progress

Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 is an opportunity to celebrate and address critical issues affecting the Latino community, especially in education.

Despite these challenges, there is hope and progress in Oakland. The OUSD Latino Student Achievement initiative is actively working to create the necessary educational conditions, culture, and competencies to advance Latino student achievement. This initiative aims to provide Latino students with the academic, social, and emotional support they need to succeed in college, careers, and life.

Children Rising is actively recruiting bilingual tutors to assist young learners, helping bridge the educational gaps in the Latino community. By providing one-on-one support and tailored learning experiences, these tutors are making a significant impact on students like Marcello, who excelled in math thanks to his bilingual tutor.

Marcello’s success story serves as an inspiration—his remarkable progress in math was made possible in part due to his bilingual tutor. By fostering individualized support, organizations like Children Rising are helping close the educational gap for Latino students in Oakland.

You enabled Marcello to work with a bilingual math tutor this year. He has gained confidence in English, is much more social with the other children, and improved significantly in math.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic culture and recognize the invaluable contributions of Latinos to our nation. However, it is also an opportunity to reflect on and address the pressing issues facing the Latino community, particularly in education. By acknowledging the disparities, supporting initiatives like OUSD’s Latino Student Achievement program, and organizations like Children Rising, we can work together to ensure that every Latino student in Oakland and across the nation has an equal opportunity to succeed. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2023, let us commit to not only celebrating but also advocating for a brighter educational future for all.

Children Rising is pleased to be once again the recipient of a generous grant from the Bernard E. & Alba Witkin Foundation. The $10,000 grant marks the second year of support from the foundation to support Children Rising’s one-on-one reading tutoring program, Succeeding by Reading.

Empowering Children to Learn to Read So They May Read To Learn

The $10,000 grant from The Witkin Foundation is helping improve the reading skills of struggling second and third-grade students. Students who cannot read to learn by the third grade are at much greater risk of failing to reach their potential in school and eventually dropping out. Support from The Witkin Foundation enables a caring adult to provide personalized, one-on-one literacy tutoring and develop a trusted relationship. Having learned to read, students can now read to learn. Reading proficiently with understanding is the goal—resulting in kids becoming lifelong learners and productive citizens.

“Without a concerted effort to provide additional support, many Oakland children will grow more discouraged as they miss out on learning foundational reading and math skills. These are crucial skills needed to become confident, active learners as they move into fourth grade, fifth grade, and middle school,” says Jim Wambach, executive director of Children Rising.

Grant Supports Interventional Literacy Tutoring

In 1982, Bernard E. (“Bernie”) and Alba Witkin established the Bernard E. & Alba Witkin Charitable Trust with funding from royalties of Bernie’s legal writings and publications to support non-profit groups advancing social justice and society. The Foundation was created in 2003 to provide greater flexibility in carrying on the 1982 Trust’s mission. Currently, approximately 100 charitable organizations receive contributions from the Foundation each year. Funds from the grant will support volunteer recruitment, screening, and training; and provide learning supplies and program materials during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Your support of Succeeding by Reading, and that of foundations and community partners like the Witkin Foundation, puts the smile of learning on the faces of eager young children.

Children Rising’s evidence-based Succeeding by Reading interventional tutoring program delivers high-dosage tutoring through volunteer tutors to children in Oakland’s most underserved communities at no cost to their families. Children Rising recruits, trains, and supports over 140 volunteer tutors, including 80 new tutors this past school year. One caring adult can make a difference in a child’s life by providing one-on-one math tutoring for a young girl or boy.

“To accelerate learning and overcome the devastating learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to increase the tutoring dosage levels within our tutoring programs. To execute this strategy, we must recruit and train 80% more tutors and hire additional staff for our literacy clinics,” Wambach said.

As always, Children Rising stands ready to enable eager-to-learn students to rise above the challenges in their neighborhoods with such a high concentration of poverty, violence, and educational inequity. Continued support from The Witkin Foundation is critical now, and we continue to be grateful for their ongoing support.

It’s not too late for YOU to be a tutor. Volunteer today, and you will give a child the one-on-one care they need to rise to their God-given potential.
