Piedmont Community Church’s generosity knows no bounds. We are grateful for the ongoing financial support and the many caring tutors, like Linda and Jeff McClain, who uplift children in Oakland schools.

As the holiday season drew near in 2023, Children Rising received a welcome, unexpected call from our beloved mission partner, Piedmont Community Church. Pastor Don Ashburn let us know that we would be the recipients of Piedmont Community Church’s Christmas Offering. Their generous gift, which included the making of the film Rise Above: A Story of Hope in Oakland, went above and beyond anything we had imagined. The offer truly warmed our hearts.

With immense gratitude, we extend our sincerest thanks to the compassionate members of Piedmont Community Church. They maintain a steadfast dedication to children in our community facing the many challenges caused by poverty, systemic racism, and educational inequity. The Christmas Offering totaled a remarkable $33,688, which provides 33 children with one-on-one tutoring and family learning support for an entire school year!

Long-time service to the children of Oakland

Since 2004, Piedmont Community Church has been an integral part of our journey. They have partnered with us as we strive to provide children in Oakland’s lowest-income, lowest-performing schools a fairer chance to succeed in school … and in life. Their commitment to the children is exemplified through more than their financial contributions alone. Eighty-seven of their members have served as tutors in schools supported by Children Rising, providing 8,000 hours of one-on-one tutoring. Their selfless acts of faith in action have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of more than 400 children (and counting) who were otherwise struggling to learn, becoming more discouraged, and falling further and further behind in school.

With this latest contribution, Piedmont Community Church’s total giving to Children Rising now stands at an incredible $245,688. This level of support has been a game-changer for us, allowing us to expand our programs and provide even more resources to the children in our community, including the launch of our newest program, FamilyBridge. From tutoring programs to essential resources for literacy and math instruction, Piedmont Community Church’s generosity continues to ensure that every child has a fairer chance to rise to their God-given potential.

Your commitment to our shared mission inspires us each day as we work tirelessly to uplift our community, one precious child at a time.

PCC’s generous Christmas Offering means that more than 33 children will receive a reading or math tutor for an entire school year—and there’s a very good chance that tutor will be a member of the PCC congregation!
