Educational inequity is a long-term social injustice impacting children in low-income neighborhoods throughout the East Bay. Children, primarily Black and Latino, are systematically locked out of opportunity due to their zip code. Historically, these eager-to-learn children are not provided enough of the right resources to give them a fair chance to succeed in school.
Children Rising partners with the faith, business, and general community, struggling elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods have a fairer chance to succeed in school … and in life. We concentrate our efforts on three programs that provide individualized reading and math support from trained, caring volunteer tutors and support for families of children enrolled in our programs.

Succeeding by Reading 2020 -2021
May 26th, 2021
The gift of literacy is so important to a child. Children who cannot read in the 3rd grade will probably not graduate from high school. Research demonstrates that children become readers when they have been supported in their own efforts to learn to read, are able to enjoy age-appropriate books, and are encouraged by positive role models. Let’s see how the Succeeding by Reading program was able to work with children through one-on-one online tutoring.

Will you take me by the hand?
November 30th, 2022
What if you were a second-grader, sitting in class, and feeling lost…wishing you had someone who could help you understand the letters and numbers your teacher keeps talking about?
What would you do if you were scared and afraid to ask for help?
Would you hide and hope no one notices you?
Who would take you by the hand?
