Empowering Families, Enabling Children — Sankofa United Elementary School
“In addition to the second and third graders Children Rising typically work with, we had many fourth and fifth graders struggling because they were at a first or second-grade level in their math skills,” Erica Macklin, Sankofa’s Community School Manager, explained. “We needed to prepare these children for middle school.”
Children Rising has always sought to listen to the needs of our school partners and provide support for the children, families, and educators. We provided program enhancements that included:
- Twice-weekly math tutoring to fourth and fifth-grade students most in need of tutoring.
- Family engagement to support learning at home.
- After-school homework tutoring for children unable to complete grade-level assignments.
“Kids are excited to come into the tutoring, kids are talking to their parents, they’re talking to each other, and they’re talking to staff about how much they love being in that environment and how much they’re learning. I cannot stop singing your praises to community members, to school leaders, to families, it has been a joy, a true joy.”
